A complete guide to building a realistic 3D Mining Dump Truck cake from blueprint to finished truck.

Over the years, some of my most popular tutorials have been vehicles – diggers, trucks, things that move and have personality. And after the incredible response to the 3D Digger cake, I knew a Mining Dump Truck tutorial had to be made.

In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to build a 3D Mining Dump Truck cake that is both structurally sound and visually impressive — using techniques I’ve refined over many years of making large-scale vehicle cakes.

We start with a real blueprint, because planning on paper before starting anything is something I always insist on. From there, I’ll take you through building a rigid pastillage tray on a cardboard holder, creating large wheels from cake rather than fondant or pastillage, and adding the fine details that make this truck come to life.

By the end, you’ll have a complete set of skills you can apply to any vehicle cake you take on.

What you will learn

  • Making a Pastillage Truck Tray on a Cardboard Holder
  • Creating a Cake Plan from a blueprint and picture
  • Creating Large Wheels (as cake) with Add-On Tread Details
  • Making Simple Handrails and Ladders with an custom cutters
  • Adding Simple Vehicle Lights
