Music themed cakes are some of the most requested and most rewarding projects a decorator can take on, because everyone recognises when you have got the shape right. In this pathway you will start with flat decorative work like sugar records, drapes and sheet music, then move into carving and panel-building real instruments: a boom box, an acoustic guitar, a jukebox with working lights, an electric guitar and finally a grand piano.
Along the way Serdar shows you the techniques that make instruments believable: pastillage parts made ahead and sprayed silver, chocolate crumb and crust coats for razor-sharp edges, faux wood staining and confectionery glazing for that lacquered finish, edible images and decals, fretboards, frets, tuning pegs and fine strings.
It suits decorators who are comfortable layering and masking a cake and want to step into structured 3D work. By the end you will be able to plan a template, build your parts in advance, carve and coat with confidence, and deliver a realistic instrument cake that looks like it could be played.
